Runes Bones

During the Middle Ages, runes became a simple alphabet. Shaman and lay people alike used bones, pebbles, and even sticks marked with runes as tools of divination.  The meaning of rune is “secret” or “mysterium”; each symbol has a deeper meaning above and beyond the sound it makes in language.
